What You Need to Learn About CCTV (Part 2)

by | Jan 17, 2018 | News | 0 comments

In our previous post we began looking at the CCTV options available to our customers beginning with the different avenues you can use to purchase and install CCTV. In part 2 of our CCTV guide we introduce some of the technical aspects of CCTV that can be used to differentiate between different systems.

Lux & Light Sensitivity

The light sensitivity of a camera is measured in Lux and this defines how well a camera can see in poor lighting conditions. In order to capture good quality images in low light or dark conditions, a day and night camera that takes advantage of near-infrared light is required.

Camera Resolution

Megapixel IP cameras can capture High Definition Video (HD Video) and provide greater detail than lower specced cameras. A 2, 3 or 4 megapixel camera can be a good choice for capturing detail in the right conditions, can aid in facial recognition and be used to cover a wide area.

The Right Lens

The lens is what gathers the light for the sensor. Everything the viewer sees, or that gets recorded on the DVR comes through the lens. It determines the distance at which a car’s number plate can be read and where a face can be recognised because the lens controls the focus. It is important to always select the camera with the right lens as per your need. (For a detailed rundown on lens types & characteristics this link is a good resource).

There are a number of things to look for when buying CCTV cameras, some are technical factors which apply to every situation regardless of the intended use such as a better lens and high quality sensor, whilst other factors are dependent on the intended use of the CCTV camera such as a day/night camera which is awesome for keeping an eye on visitors coming up the drive, but not necessarily a good choice for monitoring staff & customers in a retail environment.
